Keeping Your Children Busy

I have noticed over the years that if I keep my children busy while I am trying to work that I can get more accomplished. They are too busy to get into my work, or mess up the part of the house I have already cleaned. I take the time to get them started on a project, movie, or book; I then proceed to get to work on my own things. No matter what I need to get done this has always seemed to work.

I can manage to get the house a lot cleaner if I don’t have the kids following right behind me. They are only trying to help, but as we all know most of the help that small children give is really just another mess that we will eventually have to clean up.

One of their favorite projects to do while I am cleaning is painting a picture for someone. My three year old is really into painting pictures that made for someone in particular, especially her dad. This project keeps her busy for about twenty to thirty if she has enough paper. I just try to make sure that I have everything ready for her so that she does not have to ask for anything while I am trying to clean.

I will usually play a movie if I need to get work done. This takes up more time so I am free to work longer without many interruptions. I try to play a movie that they have not seen in while so that they do not become bored with the movie. I also try to only work for the length of the movie so that we are free to play afterward. I have found that if I limit how much work I do while they are awake then they are more cooperative.

Is There Ever Enough Time?

Do you find yourself asking this question very often? I know that I often run into the problem of trying to fit too many things into one day. I know that you cannot make more hours in a day so why do we try to fit 25 hours of work into 24? Because we are moms and we have to take care of everyone and everything. It is part of us to not tell anyone “NO” if they ask us for help. That is just the way we are. With this said, I hope that I can give you a few tips to make your everyday busy life a little easier.

I know that as a stay-at-home mom I have very little time to myself as it is not to mention when I help other people out. I am not the kind of person to tell people “no” when they need my help. This can cause a lot of problems when it comes time to get all of my daily work done on top of trying to get extra offered work done. I have found that if I create a schedule for the day that it will run a lot smoother.

I also found that if you ask for help; you are likely to get more work done. For example, if you are having a hard time with getting work done because you have to run somebody to soccer practice, go to the store, and swing by the post office. I would recommend talking to other parents on the team and see if once a week you can alternate taking the kids to and from practice. This would give you a little more free time to accomplish those things that still need to be done.

Scheduling Play Time

It can be difficult for a stay at home working mom to find the right amount of time to get everything done in one day. One of the most difficult things during the day is to find the appropriate amount of play time with her children. Through experience it is not always easy to get the right balance between work and play. This is true with any job that a parent has, but this is especially difficult when you work at home. That is because your children are constantly around with no other interaction with anyone else. Simply put, there is no one else for them to play with.

One of the best ways to find enough time for play and work is to create a schedule. When scheduling time for your breaks also make a special time for play. You do not have to take a lot of time at once, but allow somewhere around 20 to 30 minutes at a time. You should do this one time in the morning and then once in the afternoon. This will allow you time alone and time for play because everyone needs to take a break from work. If you keep the breaks for yourself along with the scheduled play time you will actually get more work done than if you play at random times throughout the day, taking you away from your concentration on work at several times instead of just a few times.

If you do not run off a regular schedule another possible solution would be to have play time only in the mornings and work in the afternoon when your children are more likely to be napping. This would at least give you a few hours that you could get uninterrupted work time. Just remember the whole point of being a stay at home mom was to enjoy your children while they are young. Try not to stress out too much about getting everything done in one day.
